Recreational Marijuana Affecting The Trucking Industry

The American Transportation Research Institute would like to know the opinions of carriers, if whether there should be changes on Federal drug Testing policies for CDL drivers, given that the legalization of marijuana is increasing in several states. The Research Advisory Committee voted that recreational marijuana should be a top priority topic & to get a better understanding of the changes of the environment on the road in protection of truck drivers and motorists. The ATRI will be conducting surveys about specific topics regarding the legalization of marijuana.

The trucking industry believes that drug violations; specifically, the use of marijuana, is likely to increase.

Between January 2020 and April 20202, the FMCSA driver data reported that 98% of the testing results involved drugs vs the use of alcohol. Positive results for marijuana ruled the highest above all other drugs combined.

Although we see an increase in the legalization of marijuana, the recreational use of marijuana is prohibited under the Federal Controlled Substances Act. This example includes The Department of Transportation (DOT), which requires occasional drug & testing.
